Your questions before working with us.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. How do I know if I'm ready to enter a new East African market?

If you have a product that works and a market you want to move into, you're ready to have the conversation. What most companies aren't ready for is entering without knowing which customers to go after first, how to position against what already exists in the market, and what the commercial plan looks like for the first 90 days. That's what we help you figure out before you commit capital.

2. We're already in East Africa but not growing the way we expected. What's usually the problem?

In most cases you’re either talking to the wrong segments, your message isn't landing precisely enough to convert, or your sales and marketing aren't working from the same plan. The result looks the same in all three cases: you're spending but staying stuck. We diagnose which one it is and fix it.

3. We have a strong product. Why aren't we converting in this market?

A strong product doesn't automatically translate into a strong commercial argument for a specific market. Eastern Africa has its own buying triggers, competitive dynamics, and decision-making logic. What converts elsewhere often needs to be reframed entirely for this context. We build the commercial case that makes your product the obvious choice for specific audiences.

4. How long before we see results?

The first output — commercial clarity and a prioritized roadmap — comes out of a 2-day workshop. In-market results depend on what you're activating and in which segment. What we can tell you is that every engagement is designed to produce something you can act on immediately, not a report you file away.

5. How is working with Subena different from hiring a consultant or agency?

Most consultants and agencies start with execution… content, campaigns, outreach. We start with the commercial logic that determines whether any of that will work. If the foundation isn't right, execution just burns budget faster. We fix what's underneath first, then the activity on top of it actually converts.

6. Do you work with companies just starting to explore East Africa, or only those already operating?

Both. We work with companies at the exploration stage who need to understand the market before committing — as well as with companies already operating who aren't seeing the results they need. The starting point is different but the process is the same: understand where you are, define where the fix should be, and build from there.
